Last  Monday two minutes after midnight a 7.8 earthquake shook the upper East Coast of the South Island many homes were damaged and  evacuated. It had destroyed roads farms and knocked down trees, the 7.8 earthquake was flowed by around about thousands of aftershocks.
An earthquake occurs when the tectonic plates rub together making the ground move when the plates move they separate and make big cracks in the ground.

In many towns up the East Coast of North and South Island had tsunamis warnings to signal them to stay clear of the coastline and move to higher ground. Many people have been affected by this earthquake people can’t go to work, teenagers couldn’t finish their exams, truck drivers and farmers families and many more were affected by the earthquake.
